A Horizontal Harmony
House Miekka is a single-family home located on a riverfront site within the open landscape of Southern Ostrobothnia. The log-frame building is positioned to maximize views toward the river while forming a sheltered inner courtyard that provides privacy and protection from the prevailing winds.
The architectural concept is based on an L-shaped volume with a simple pitched roofs. This primary mass is complemented by a connected carport and a separate sauna, together forming a coherent composition on the site. The home includes three bedrooms, an office, and a guest room. The living and dining spaces open toward the backyard through large glazed façades, creating a strong visual connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.
The design brings together the client’s diverse functional needs with a clear, horizontal architectural language. The façades are treated with a greying technique that allows the timber surfaces to blend naturally into the landscape over time, reinforcing the building’s calm and understated presence. The interior design is guided by a warm, timeless, and subtly contrasting aesthetic.
