The Wooden Sculpture
The proposal for the Sara Hildén art museum integrates into the historic urban fabric, connecting existing elements into a coherent whole while respecting the site’s cultural and architectural heritage. It introduces a contemporary layer that supports the activity of the area and its long-term development.
The design is guided by the site’s old trees and sightlines. The existing vegetation defines the building’s footprint and helps form a new public square at a key crossing point. This square links the Finlayson area with Wilhelm von Nottbeck Park, creating an active urban space for events and everyday use.
The museum consists of two sculptural wooden volumes that together form a distinct gateway to Finlayson. The tapered rooflines and recessed façades give the building a light and refined character. At street level, the lobby and café open directly to the square, supporting interaction between interior and exterior spaces.
The wooden structure continues Finlayson’s craft tradition. Aspen shingles unify the façades and roof surfaces, giving the museum a strong identity that relates to the surrounding industrial buildings.
Inside, the spaces are organized around a clear and accessible circulation route. Moveable wall systems allow flexible exhibition layouts, and upper-level galleries open to views across the site and city. Technical functions and loading areas are placed discreetly keeping the surroundings calm and pedestrian-friendly.
